A closer look at the new trailer released this week for Avengers: Age of Ultron reveals not one, but two women whose identities have yet to be determined.
When the new trailer was unveiled Monday night (Jan. 12), a lot of fans immediately caught the shot at around 32 seconds of what appeared to be a dark-skinned woman removing a robe in front of a small body of water in some sort of cave.
But the crew at Slashfilm noticed that in another, later shot, which shows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the grip of some kind of blue, electrical energy, there is a second mystery woman behind him who is clad in what looks like a kind of ceremonial garb -- and whose hand motions indicate that she is either directing that energy at the God of Thunder or drawing on it herself.
So, who are these women? Slashfilm offered up a few theories, based on their own research as well as what fans have been saying online (thanks for doing the work, guys). Let's start with the woman in the cave (potential spoilers ahead):
Dora Milaje: Some fans believe that she could be a member of the Dora Milaje, the team of female warriors who protect the royal family of the African nation Wakanda. Supposedly the Avengers will make at least a passing visit to Wakanda in Age of Ultron, and we wouldn't be surprised to see a cameo from Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) himself. So why not someone from his security team?
Shuri: The younger sister of Black Panther -- who dons that identity herself at one point in the comics -- could serve as the bridge to audiences meeting her brother T'Challa. Plus she has a history of wanting revenge against Klaw (Andy Serkis), who we know is in the film too.
Storm: All but impossible, since the longtime member of the X-Men -- and T'Challa's eventual bride -- is wholly owned as a film character by 20th Century Fox.
Nebula: Folks saw a bald head and got excited, but a quick study shows that the woman in the scene is black, not silver and blue. Plus James Gunn keeps insisting that the Avengers have a better chance of crossing over with Batman and Superman than the Guardians of the Galaxy, at least for now.
As for the woman in the shot with Thor:
Enchantress: An enemy and sometimes ally of Thor, she somewhat resembles the woman in the screen capture of the scene with Thor. But Enchantress might be too significant a character, at least to Thor, to shove inside an already crowded movie. Or maybe Thor is given a vision of the Enchantress by Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), predicting events to come in Thor: Ragnarok?
Hela: Daughter of Loki, Hela has been another fairly major villain for Thor in the comics (what's his problem with beautiful goddesses?). But as with Enchantress, it feels like a bit of a stretch to introduce her here.
Moondragon: Is the woman in this shot bald, like the one in the cave? If so, she could be Moondragon, master of martial arts and psychic powers. Like the others, Moondragon has a long history in Marvel comics and has switched sides many times. She once mentally enslaved Thor, but has also fought Thanos and even became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, so she has many deep ties within both the Marvel comics realm and the MCU.
So, there you are. If you ask me, I'd go with the Dora Milaje for the woman in the cave and possibly a Witch-induced vision of Enchantress for the female behind Thor. Who do you think they might be?
