Considering he’s the guy who actually conceived of the entire Star Wars universe, you’d think George Lucas might’ve been curious enough to check out that first teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens that blew up the Internet a few weeks ago. Well, then you’d be wrong.
In an intriguing interview with Page Six, Lucas was asked to comment on the footage revealed in Abrams’ trailer. Turns out Lucas claims he hasn’t actually seen it. Why? He wants to see the whole thing, in a theater, before making any judgment on Disney’s new direction with the franchise.
Here’s an excerpt from his comments:
“I don’t know anything about it. I haven’t seen it yet … Because it’s not in the movie theater. I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there.”
Okay, it makes sense Lucas wouldn’t want to give an opinion on 88 seconds of footage that reveals next to nothing — other than a peek at some new characters and a nifty Millennium Falcon dogfight — but you’d think he at least checked it out. You know, late night, kicked back with the laptop. Not even a bit curious? Really, George?
It obviously has to be a bit of an awkward situation for Lucas. Yes, Disney is consulting with him to some degree on the direction of the franchise, but for the first time ever he doesn’t actually get to call the shots on the future of Star Wars. Admittedly, he was paid billions to give up that right, but it still must be strange watching your magnum opus move on with new people at the helm.
Are you surprised Lucas hasn’t even seen the teaser footage? Do you think the new films will live up to the legacy of the original trilogy?
