We average folks still have to wait until next month to see Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, but Marvel guru Joss Whedon has already seen a near-finished cut. Turns out the explosive ending has him a little worried about Avengers 2. Why?
Because Black pulls out over a dozen Iron Man suits in the epic final battle, which has Whedon a little worried he won’t be able to top it once he gets the gang back together for The Avengers 2.
Marvel exec Kevin Feige spilled the beans in a recent interview, noting he screened the upcoming sequel for Whedon:
“There are a lot of suits in this movie. While it is both a movie in which he spends quite a bit of time outside of the suit, as you see it’s not working and he’s -- and he’s with Ty in Tennessee, by the end of it we reveal that underneath the house, which is now covered with rubble, he’s got dozens and dozens of suits.
And once, throughout the course of the movie, and all that rubble gets pulled aside by construction cranes, just when he needs him, he calls them to the rescue and we have what I think is the biggest most action-packed finale we’ve had. I showed the film to Joss Whedon, who is our writer-director of Avengers and who is currently working on Avengers 2, and he saw the finale of this and he goes, ‘Now what am I supposed to do now? What am I going to do in Avengers 2?’”
It’s nice to see that Marvel isn’t getting gun-shy about pulling out the big stories for the standalone movies, now that they have the proven commodity of The Avengers. They’ve succeeded by taking risks up to this point, and it looks like they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
But do you think Iron Man 3 could be too big? Does Whedon have anything to worry about?
