Ever since Ryan Reynolds stole the show in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as the merc with a mouth Deadpool, a film version has been drifting through development hell. The latest?
It sounds like the purgatory stay continues, though Reynolds still sounds eager to suit up and kick ass if the studio ever decides to actually make the movie.
The current treatment is apparently a hard-R take on the character — which is probably the only way to do it justice. But that makes it an even riskier proposition for a studio to take on.
Reynolds told Total Film that the snarky, self-referential script is updated and ready to go, but that everyone is just waiting on a green light:
“That movie is alive and kicking, and then it’s dead as a doornail. Then it’s alive and kicking and then it’s dead… it’s like the worst relationship I’ve ever had!
The character knows he’s a comic-book character, he knows he’s in a film, he knows who the executives are at the studio making the movie. In the current iteration of the script, Deadpool is aware of the Wolverine movie. He doesn’t say anything disparaging about it but he does at one point play with the Deadpool action figure with some curiosity.”
It’d be interesting to see how this would turn out if they’d ever actually make it, and if they keep the budget down and commit to just having some dark fun with it, it could be a surprise hit (a la Kick-Ass).
But sadly, it sounds like we might never know.
