Casting continues for Columbia's as-yet-untitled Spider-Man reboot, and it looks like Denis Leary may soon join the already impressive list of names—though based on the character he's being brought on board to play, he might not survive to the end of the movie.
Leary (whom most of you will probably better know as Diego the Sabertooth in the Ice Age movies—while others will know him as Tommy in Rescue Me) is in negotiations to play Capt. George Stacy, father to Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone. Gwen Stacy is Peter Parker's (Andrew Garfield) love interest in director Marc Webb's movie.
In the Marvel comic-book lore, Capt. Stacy was a character who was often in contact with Peter Parker/Spider-Man. However, the captain accidentally perished during a battle between the webslinging superhero and Doctor Octopus, and the event would lead to Gwen Stacy's lifelong hatred of our favorite hero (though she sadly died young at the hands of the Green Goblin in the classic "The Death of Gwen Stacy" storyline).
Leary will step into the role played by James Cromwell (Star Trek: First Contact, Babe) in the last movie of the franchise, director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.
Leary would join other recent additions Martin Sheen as Ben Parker ("Uncle Ben"), Sally Field as May Parker ("Aunt May") and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard.
Columbia's Spider-Man reboot is set to be released on July 3 2012.
