Though Bilbo Baggins and his band of new dwarf friends seem to be having most of the fun in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, it's important to remember that there are other major characters afoot. And what they lack in fun, they make up for in power. The magical White Council takes center stage in the latest gorgeous poster for Peter Jackson's epic.
Though, as the title suggests, Jackson's trilogy will likely spend most of its time following Bilbo's adventures with dwarves, trolls, goblins and a big mean dragon, there's a bigger storm brewing in Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings, after all, is still on the horizon, and the White Council is concerned about darkness brewing in the East.
To add some proper prequel foreshadowing to these flicks, Jackson has re-assembled four of Middle-earth's most powerful beings. Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) will spend a lot of time with Bilbo, Thorin and company, but he'll also be off on some errands of his own (as the trailers show) and taking some meetings with Saruman the White (Christopher Lee), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving). We all remember how awesome all four of these beings were in LOTR, and just seeing them assembled here on the poster is giving us chills.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14.
