Hugh Jackman just revealed that even the Wolverine can't escape cancer.
The Oscar-nominated star best known around these parts as the guy who's played Wolverine in seven movies now (if you count the X-Men: First Class cameo and the forthcoming Days of Future Past) posted this photo to his Instagram account yesterday, explaining that a trip to the doctor to get a spot on his nose checked ended up returning a rather serious diagnosis.
"Deb [Jackman's wife, Deborra-Lee Furness] said to get the mark on my nose checked," Jackman wrote in the caption. "Boy, was she right! I had a basil [sic] cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"
Basal cell carcinoma is a form of skin cancer that can be treated a number of ways. If left untreated, though, it can spread, result in other forms of skin cancer developing or, in very aggressive cases, lead to other types of cancer internally, according to the Mayo Clinic. Jackman did not reveal whether his carcinoma was anything more serious than a mark on his nose, but this is a very common diagnosis for people in his home country of Australia. So, like him, we're glad he got it checked out, and we're also glad he's telling others to be on the lookout.
So, despite the scare, it looks like -- for now -- Jackman'll keep baring his claws onscreen.
