Finally! Sony and Marvel Studios have begun to cast their upcoming Spider-Man movie reboot, and Deadline reports that Zendaya has been tapped for a key role alongside Tom Holland’s web-crawler.
Zendaya has been the star of The Disney Channel series Shake It Up! and K.C. Undercover, and we're being told she's one of the actresses who've been quietly testing for parts. She’ll apparently play a character named Michelle, and the powers-that-be are keeping mum on the role, but Deadline says it doesn’t look like she’ll play Peter Parker’s romantic lead since, in the comics, Peter’s main love interests have been Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.
Could she end up playing one of those roles and the name Michelle is simply to throw us off the scent? That’ll remain to be seen. But if it is misdirection, my guess would be she’s playing Mary Jane.
However, the other (extremely) likely possibility is that Zendaya is playing Michele Gonzales, a supporting Spider-Man character created in 2009 who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #592. She later became Peter’s roommate and, for a brief time, his love interest. A criminal defense lawyer known for her fiery temper, she’s also a martial artist with a penchant for her shotgun. If that's the case, the movie will mark the character's first on-screen appearance.
The movie, produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, will be helmed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), with a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. It’ll star Tom Holland in the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Before headlining his first solo film, the character will make his eagerly anticipated debut in the MCU (as part of that cross-studio deal) in Captain America: Civil War when the comic-book movie opens on May 6.
The as-of-yet-still-untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to spin its web into theaters on July 7, 2017. What do you think of this casting news? Do you believe Zendaya's Michelle is actually Spidey character Michele Gonzales?
