Early versions of the story that became the first Expanse novel, Leviathan Wakes, were worked out in an online play-by-post roleplaying game. Holden, Naomi, Shed, Alex and Amos are all named after and based on characters from that game.
Shed says Alex is "hypoxic," a reference to Hypoxia, a pathological condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of an adequate oxygen supply. Side effects in outer space include impromptu performances of "Oh My Darling, Clementine."
On the day the spacewalk was filmed on the exterior of the Knight, Wes Chatham's wife went into labor in California. Coincidentally, this is the very same scene used in auditions that won Wes the role of Amos Burton.
The scene featuring Miller and Havelock descending into the supply tunnels of Ceres was filmed by placing the actors on a platform and lifting the wall behind them, rather than fitting the camera, lights and actors onto an elevator together.
The robot arm on the Donnager hits the Knight with an electronic pulse that kills its engine so that it can be captured. The sound effect was described as the larger ship hitting the smaller ship with a taser.
