There's a weird phenomenon that exists on planet Earth where British actors are frequently cast as people with Southern accents. It's akin to the phenomenon of everyone in Ancient Rome or fantasy movies always having a British accent. We currently see this happening every week on Wynonna Earp where Dominique Provost-Chalkley, who speaks the Queen's English when she is a normal human person, puts on a drawl (more midwestern than Southern, but go with us) when she is the sister of a demon hunter on Wynonna Earp.
Because we are anthropologists here at Syfy Digital, we have decided to break down this phenomenon:
Dominique Provost-Chalkley. Wynonna Earp.
Waverly Earp. Cute, Fiesty, Smart, Sassy, Plucky, Sexy, British? Wait, what? Mark us shocked as well. Dominique Provost-Chalkley has slightly mid-western drawl accent so down pat that we didn't even notice. Bratty kid sister, or British sleeper cell? What is Wynonna without Waverly and her encyclopedic knowledge of the Revenants and all things Wyatt. If you couldn't tell a raging existential crisis has set in, so we had to know, were their other famously British stars who nailed the American accent so convincingly that we never even knew, and gosh darnit their certainly were:
Ryan Kwanten. True Blood
Charlie Hunman. Sons of Anarchy
Andrew Lincoln. The Walking Dead
Stephen Moyer. True Blood
Kelly Macdonald. No Country For Old Men.
Okay, she's Scottish, but that's part of the British Isles!
So the moral of the story is, if you hear a Southern accent in a movie or TV show, it may be from a resident of the British Isles. The only Southern accent you can 100% count on is this one! This is the real deal!
