While we anxiously await Sunday night's premiere of Game of Thrones Season 7, our thoughts naturally drift toward what the future holds for the mesmerizing medieval fantasy series. News has circulated of HBO's desire for a prequel spin-off show, and George R.R. Martin is tossing ideas around with executives as to the best approach and story choice moving forward.
Until official decisions are made, here's an animated pilot taking inspiration from Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books that could make for a captivating screen story.
Animator Patrick McCarthy has created a 20-minute video titled Doom of Valyria, chronicling the history of the Valyrian Freehold, the incestuous Targaryen family and the tragic fall of the noble dragon-riding Valyrians. McCarthy's goal is to attract possible interest by the cable network to adapt into a live-action series, but it stands alone as a provocative project made by passionate admirers of the epic source material.
Here's the video description:
For 5,000 years, the Valyrian Freehold ruled the world, until its surrounding volcanoes obliterated it from history. But, what truly destroyed Valyria?
Soar back into the deep and dire past of Westeros and tell us if you think this heroic yarn might make for a spectacular spin-off.
