Time Travel Is Timeless

Timeless is joining the ranks of great time travel programming. Here's what we're excited to see in NBC's new drama.

Timeless, a show about time travel with an ironic title (if you can time travel you should really have more time, not less time, right?), looks like it has the chops to enter into the time travel subgenre with some panache. Check out the trailer below so that the rest of what we're about to say makes sense, also you really should have already seen this trailer because it's awesome.

TIMELESS | Official Trailer | NBC Fall Shows 2016

In case that wasn't explicit enough, here's the Offish Descripsh (because who has enough time to type out official description? Although I guess I just did anyway.) In Timeless, a thrilling action-adventure series, a mysterious criminal steals a secret state-of-the-art time machine, intent on destroying America as we know it by changing the past. Our only hope is an unexpected team: a scientist, a soldier and a history professor who use the machine's prototype to travel back in time to critical events. While they must make every effort not to affect the past themselves, they must also stay one step ahead of this dangerous fugitive.

So let's look at this through the 12 Monkeys lens. This is Syfy after all, and 12 Monkeys is our benchmark for good Science Fiction in the time travel subgenre. This show is certainly framed differently; someone in the presents takes a time machine into the past to start messing with historical events, whereas 12 Monkeys really takes place in the near future. However, Timeless did kind of nail the trio-of-time-travelers-all-approaching-time-travel-from-the-different-perspectives-of-their-professions. Scientist = Cassie, Soldier = Cole, History Professor = Ramse? Hey, we never said it was a perfect analogy, but the numbers check out.

When time travel is approached, the elephant in the room is usually WWII and going back to kill a certain dictator who subsequently had a style of mustache named after him. If the trailer, showcasing the Hindenburg, is any indication this show will place itself in the time frame to make that assasination happen. And there are also other events throughout history that are such pivotal crossroads that we can't help but speculate, "What if things had gone differently?" Here's to hoping Timeless answers those questions.
