Meanwhile, still dangerously close to the Scar, Arthur wanders into a town called Cronenburgh. It's got some sweet smelling air, a lovely hazy filter, and looks like a lovely place to live. But…it's definitely sinister, right?
When Grace catches up to Arthur, she finds that he's decided to stay here in Cronenburgh. He thinks it's their reward for all that they've been through. Grace is unsure, but agrees to go along with him to a party, where they meet a lot of odd Stepford-like people.
Turns out, there's something in the air. A smell that seems to lull people into being super happy and excited about being where they are. Even Grace gets in on the act at one point. That is, until she sees a flash of a dead-looking girl in a mirror. Something is definitely up.
Meanwhile, Aki has become even more human than before. She has memories of harming Christopher from a while ago. And she loves him so much, she wants to help with his plan to take down Heart Industries. The plan is to find Arthur and go from there.
Back in Cronenburgh, Grace knows that something's up. She rushes to find Arthur, who doesn't believe her (because he's all goofy from the gas). She keeps trying to convince him to leave, but he won't have it. So, Grace goes off on her own.
Arthur SHOULD be upset by this, but instead, he waits behind to see the Town Cobbler head toward the Scar - to commit suicide. More than that, Arthur has agreed to assume the role of cobbler now. That's how it works here. Someone dies and you take their place.
Finally, as Grace covers her mouth and investigates, she realizes that the gas is clouding everyone's vision. THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE HERE! The Cobbler's wife is about to marry Arthur, and when Grace protests, she's knocked out. Uh-oh.
And that's when Slink, having conned someone at Heart into giving up the location, enters Cronenburgh, wearing a mask so as to escape the gas. He can see this for what it is. But is he here as friend or foe? Hard to say, but he definitely seals up the crack leaking the gas.
As the gas starts wearing off (thanks, Slink!), Arthur starts to see the world for what it is. Everyone is terrible. As Arthur backs away from his terrifying bride, he falls down the hole into the sludge with Grace.
Meanwhile, Aki and Christopher, on the road to find Arthur and Grace realize that she's less human than she thought. Heart's security protocols (remember when Christopher threw up all over the place?) seem to have been triggered. A danger to the mission, she convinces Christopher to leave her behind.
Slink tells Grace and Arthur that he'll save them, so long as they go on one last adventure with him. They refuse. But confess their love for one another, while covered in terrible brown sludge. So, they have that going for them.
So about that one last adventure Slink wants Grace and Arthur to go on... The deal is - as a trio they get to the bottom of Heart Industries' obsession with Grace, and Slink gets to save his skin. Plus? Grace and Arthur are in love now. They can do anything together.
