WARNING: If you don't want to know what happened in this episode, don't read this photo recap!
This is Alice. And her supervisor Nathan. Alice has moved to this town called Garrett, taking a job as a social worker, a job Nathan spends a good deal of time explaining to her. Turns out, this town has some weird stuff going down. For example, the story of Ben and Kasha.
This staircase. Appearing in the woods. According to Nathan, Kara and Ben did the right thing by running away from it. People know that if you see this in the woods, you run. It's been a local legend for decades.
The problem is, as Ben rushed back to get out of the park, he runs afoul of this terrifying tiny person with a distinctly evil face and a mallet. Ben was pummeled and Kasha caught up to them, but it's unclear what happened to her.
Before she starts work, Alice takes the opportunity to get settled in her new place. It turns out that Alice has also moved her sister Zoe, who has some pretty serious emotional problems, to this town. They seem to be on the run from their institutionalized mother. It's a rough family dynamic either way.
The landlady is a woman named Louise, who is a taxidermist, an ex-reporter, and is writing a book about the town. Alice tells Louise that her sister Zoe is in recovery and also kind of insane. And Louise tells Zoe she doesn’t want a relatioship with the girls, she just wants to put together a stuffed raccoon.
The next morning, Alice and Nathan ride out to the neighborhood known as Butcher's Block to meet a client. He tells her this is an area with no resources, that sprung up around a meat-packing plant called Peach's Meats. They meet with Tanya, who is scheduled to have her daughter taken away that day.
While Alice is talking to Tanya, she feels … something strange. That's because there's something in the wall behind her! It seems to be smelling her and also it's licking the wall behind her. Overall super creepy.
Alice heads down the hall to meet with Izzy, the little girl she's here to help. She discusses the red cloak the little girl found in the park, and Alice finds that Izzy has a hole in the wall in her room where, ostensibly, that creepy bald person gets in and out of the walls.
After Alice calls Nathan in to take a look and figure out if there's actually something in the walls, the door to the room closes quickly and traps them in. Outside, they hear Izzy and Tanya screaming in the living room and when they finally get back in the room, they find them gone. Worse, the police seem to be of no help and don't believe them.
After Zoe shares a joint in the yard with the landlady Louise, Zoe shares the story that her mental illness came on when she was 26, in what was called an insidious onset. Louise is worried about it but moves on. Later, Alice explains what happened at work and drives out to Tanya's house to re-investigate. And she takes her sister Zoe along.
As Zoe takes a pause to catch a cigarette, she spots our tiny little friend in red. And we don't mean Izzy. We mean that scary tiny person in red who we've previously seen chasing Ben! Thinking that it must be Izzy, Zoe decides to catch up to her.
Meanwhile, Alice goes to look for Izzy near the "lady-tree" that Izzy had mentioned earlier. Instead, Alice finds an older gentlemanin a hat, who tells her that he used to own the place they're standing on. His house used to be near there.
Zoe catches up to who she thinks is Izzy, but it turns out to be this spooky little creature, eating something gross we can't yet identify. The creature is standing at the bottom of those freaky stairs that everyone has been warning Alice about. And that's not the worst of it...
Alice confronts Zoe about taking her meds and about what she saw. That's when Zoe reminds Alice that 26 is the age that both their mother and Zoe went crazy. Now Alice is 26, so maybe that's what's happening between them. With that, her bags are packed and Zoe heads toward the bus station.
Alice goes off to apologize to Lousie for the noise from their fight. That's when she discovers an entire wall of clues in Louise's study. The book she's writing is about what happens in the neighborhood called Butcher's Block. That's when Alice realizes there's a photo...
