After its first trailer convinced fans that, hey, maybe director Robert Rodriguez could actually pull this off, the Alita: Battle Angel movie (adapting the Gunnm manga) has let loose a new trailer, which plays up the divine and warrior aspects of its central protagonist.
Adapting from manga hasn’t had a great track record, but by working closely with original creator Yukito Kishiro, the filmmakers are perhaps the best equipped to tell this story to American audiences. It also helps to have James Cameron, a lover of the source material, on board as an executive producer and co-screenwriter.
Check out the latest action-packed trailer below:
Motorball, a mix of roller derby and gladitorial fight to the death, is prominently featured in the new trailer. While this fictional sport didn't enter the Alita mythos until later storylines in the manga, Cameron was adamant about including it. Per ComingSoon.net, Rodriguez said the following at the movie's NYCC panel:
"Jim said those who are fans of the graphic novel would be pretty disappointed if Motorball wasn’t in this movie. So, he found a really cool Jim way to incorporate it, and it’s really badass."
Rosa Salazar’s cybernetic heroine, alongside a cast including Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali, continues feeding into James Cameron’s M.O. when it comes to filmmaking: Take a young woman and make her change the world.
Alita: Battle Angel, originally supposed to open this December, will actually hit theaters on Feb. 14, 2019.
