Disney's John Carter has not had an easy path toward theaters, with would-be audiences either confused about what it was or thinking that it's woefully derivative. And as Pixar's first live-action flick, there's a lot riding on its success. But other films have overcome even worse buzz to become legitimate box-office successes.

And bad buzz can come in all forms: magazine features investigating ballooning budgets and directorial replacements, protests by concerned would-be moviegoers, boycotts by religious watchdog groups, and just straight-up fan-fueled Internet flames.

All of the movies here have been victim of some form of negative word of mouth before their release, and they've all gone on to be profitable ventures—some by rather wide margins (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and others by the skin of their teeth (Green Lantern).
