Movies have a long history of taking heat for a little too much gore.

We know, we know, there are many of you out there who think there's no such thing as "too much gore," but sometimes a film that pushes the envelope on violence can attract some unwanted attention. Earlier this week we saw Jim Carrey bashing the extreme gun violence of Kick-Ass 2 before the flick's even out, and it got us thinking about all the other films that took a bit of a public beating for their more gruesome bits.

Sometimes the controversy is just a stir caused by critics or audiences who just couldn't handle it. Sometimes the government decides to get involved, and films can end up cut to pieces or banned for years on end. Whatever the case, have a look back at more than a dozen sci-fi, fantasy and horror flicks (sometimes all three at once) that were at the center of ultraviolent controversy.
