1979 Trek news story proves nerds haven't changed much in 33 years

People change all the time: they get new clothes, new hair styles, new spouses. But for some of us, our innate geekiness is always there. And it's here in this video about Star Trek fandom from 1979.

In this clip, made after the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, venerable reporter Hugh Downs discusses the Star Trek phenomenon, including interviews with Gene Roddenberry, the cast and crew of the show and, of course, the fans.

The 1979 news segment is surprisingly fair toward our disco-era counterparts, as opposed to modern news and television shows that tend to treat us as affably dorky at best and weirdly dorky at worst.

The only thing dorky about this clip is DeForest Kelley's necklace.

Of course, there's one other reason to check this video out: Nichelle Nichols, who appears heartbreakingly briefly, is smokin' hot here.
