The first clip from the new indie sci-fi flick Last Days on Mars has finally been released, and space looks to be a very creepy place.

Directed by Ruari Robinson, who almost helmed that aborted Akira flick, the British sci-fi horror project screened at the recent Cannes Film Festival to a decent amount of buzz. The screenplay is based on Sydney J. Bounds’ short story The Animators, and it tells a freaky zombie tale of the final days of a six-month mission to Mars.

The first clip does a good job of setting the mood, and even has a vague homage to the classic Alien chestburster scene, with a dash of Prometheus thrown in. Hey, zombies are all the rage these days ... and now they’re in space!

The flick stars Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense), Johnny Harris (Snow White and the Huntsman), Elias Koteas (Shutter Island), Romola Garai (Amazing Grace), Goran Kostic (Taken) and Tom Cullen.

It’s set to hit theaters in September in the U.K., but is still awaiting a U.S. release date.
