We’ve been wondering how Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) ambitious Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would follow up the stellar ending of Rise. Now we have our first look at the sequel and all those super-smart monkeys in action.

Production is officially underway, and we have our first look at veteran character actor Andy Serkis in his trademark monkey mo-cap suit. Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, is playing the main ape Caesar in the sequel.

Judging by the numerous mo-cap actors, it looks like Caesar will have more than enough ape friends with him the next time around.

In addition to Serkis, the film also stars Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, Judy Greer, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Gary Oldman.

Here’s the official synopsis:

A group of scientists in San Francisco struggle to stay alive in the aftermath of a plague that is wiping out humanity, while Caesar tries to maintain dominance over his community of intelligent apes.

The sequel opens May 23, 2014.
