Good news, folks. Joss Whedon is officially coming back to television, and he's bringing the Marvel universe with him.

It’s taken long enough, but ABC just made it official: The small-screen Avengers spinoff Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be on the schedule this fall. Welcome back, Joss (Avengers, Buffy, FIrefly), we’ve missed you.

The network confirmed the show has received a series order, meaning they apparently liked the pilot Whedon put together a while back. The series will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follow a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents looking into all kinds of crazy cases.

Considering how well the Marvel films have fared at the box office, and the built-in audience of geeks/Whedon fans, this could be the biggest hit of the fall.

Clark Gregg will reprise his film role as Agent Coulson, who will be joined by Ming-Na (Stargate Universe) as former soldier Melinda May; Chloe Bennet as superhero-obsessed hacker Skye; Elizabeth Henstridge as science expert Gemma Simmons; Iain De Caestecker as tech guru Leo Fitz; and Brett Dalton as hotshot Agent Grant.

Oh, and behind the camera? Only a who’s who of Whedon alums (plus Whedon himself, of course, as executive producer). The list includes Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville).

The network has released the promo shot above, giving us a look at the team (note the obvious absence of a spear in Coulson’s chest), but they plan to air the first teaser for the show Sunday during the season finale of Once Upon A Time. So, yeah, watch and/or DVR that sucker.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series.  “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Where do you think S.H.I.E.L.D. will land on the schedule? Where would you put it?
