Hansel and Gretel are all grown up! The fabled storybook siblings are dressed in leather and packing heat in the new film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Check out the first photo of Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the tortured pair.
Entertainment Weekly got first dibs on an exclusive photo of the new Hansel and Gretel. Renner and Arterton headline the latest adaptation of the German folktale, which centers on adult versions of the characters. After almost being eaten alive by a sadistic old woman, the duo have turned into butt-kicking vigilantes.
Renner describes his version of Hansel as a Han Solo type, while Arterton's Gretel is "a thinker," and more "open-minded than he is." Even though this revamped story will focus on the siblings' adult lives, Arterton says there will be flashbacks to the original story: They shot a scene that re-enacts the terrifying event, complete with a candy house and ugly witches.
With a childhood like that we're not surprised Hansel and Gretel become professional killers. According to Arterton:
"In our minds, these are two people who grew up with no parents and they only have each other and the bond they have, and with the complexities of that, some resentment."
The first trailer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is rumored to debut next Thursday, while the film itself opens March 2.
