As they say: This is not your father's Green Arrow ... nor is it Smallville's Green Arrow. The haunted hero of The CW's Arrow is a darker man entirely, at least judging by this first image of the Emerald Archer.

One of the more intriguing prospects of this year's pilot season, the Stephem Amell-starring Arrow is being directed and executive-produced by genre veteran David Nutter (Game of Thrones, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The X-Files), who recalls establishing a similarly real-world tone for DC's big blue schoolboy:

"When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. ... Arrow is a different show—darker and harder-edged—but it's the same core idea. We're creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. [Costume designer] Colleen Atwood's great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort."

The fact that they've hired multiple-Oscar-winner Atwood (Silence of the Lambs, Edward Scissorhands) to design Oliver Queen's work suit should show just how seriously The CW is taking Arrow. She and Nutter are the very definition of big guns.
