Kick-Ass (2010)

"I was the last person you'd expect to become a superhero."

Kick-Ass kicked off a new decade of SXSW, bringing R-rated violence, four-letter words, and a brazenly irreverent sendup of the superhero genre to 2010's opening night. Only Lovers Left Alive (2014) Official Trailer

Only Lovers Left Alive (2014)

"We're going to have so much fun together."

SXSW 2014 brought two wildly stylish yet very different tales of vampires seeking blood and love in the modern world. The first is Jim Jarmusch's star-studded hangout movie, Only Lovers Left Alive. Tom Hiddleston stars as a brooding bloodsucker who's lost his lust for life. His seductive long-time lover (Tilda Swinton) swings by to lift his spirits, but their swoon is soon derailed by an impulsive vamp (Mia Wasikowska) and her dangerous dalliance with a mortal wannabe (Anton Yelchin). What We Do In The Shadows - Official Trailer

What We Do In the Shadows (2014)

"We need some fresh blood."

Before he became the MCU's hottest director (in more ways than one), Taika Waititi teamed with Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement for a masterful mockumentary about New Zealand's secret vampire population. The pair wrote, directed, and starred in What We Do In The Shadows, a creepy comedy about the hidden lives of four undead flatmates whose routine is rattled by a reckless newbie and some wacky werewolves (not swearwolves). Far from the effortless cool of Only Lovers Left Alive's heart-stopping heroes, these monsters are cringingly unhip yet undeniably hilarious. Jonny Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Rhys Darby and Jackie van Beek co-star.

Hush (2016)

Writer/director Mike Flanagan has built an awe-inspiring reputation as a horror auteur with jaw-dropping films such as Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game, and Doctor Sleep. Colossal Trailer #2 (2017) | Movieclips Trailers

Colossal (2017)

"Give 'em a good show."

This SXSW select is one of my all-time favorites. Written and directed by Timecrimes' Nacho Vigalondo, Colossal stars Anne Hathaway as a trainwreck of woman who becomes a real monster when she's drunk. No, really. Somehow, her lumberings back from the bar manifest a rampaging kaiju over Seoul, South Korea. However, in this wildly original, ferociously funny, and cleverly feminist film, her towering alter-ego isn't the movie's greatest monster.

The line to get into this premiere wrapped around the block and then another with fans desperate to see the latest in horror greatness. And Us did not disappoint. Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex star as a family of four whose beach vacation becomes a living nightmare when deranged doppelgangers arrive on their doorstep. LITTLE MONSTERS Trailer (2019)

Little Monsters (2019)

"If you're happy and you know it..."

Lupita Nyong'o was the queen of SXSW last year as she headlined not one but two terrific horror movies. While Us was a profoundly terrifying social criticism of modern America, Little Monsters jaunted to Australia to tell a tale of a field trip gone way wrong. The dazzling leading lady stars as a ukelele-playing teacher turned zombie slayer. Also on board are Josh Gad as a crass kids-show personality and Alexander England as a selfish slacker and aspiring casanova. Sound weird? It is! You're welcome.
