The cold black void of outer space is a destination best left for blazing rocketships, spinning astral bodies, glowing nebulae and streaking comets. This infinite near-vacuum environment offers no refuge for helmet-less mouthbreathers or anyone who'd like their screams heard at any recognizable level of volume. Personally, the extreme dangers of travel or exposure to this most hostile of all environments keeps my feet planted firmly and comfortable on Terra Firma. That and the fact that I am conspicuously devoid of any form of able spacecraft or astronaut training beyond watching Sandra Bullock whine and cry in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity.

Occasionally, human beings exhibiting extraordinary abilities are able to withstand the rigors of the cosmos in comic book covers spanning the decades. Here we present to you a collection of classic covers depicting superheroes and supervillains trapped in outer space, free-floating the great divide and battling it out to their final breath. Have a look at Batman, Fantastic Four, ROM, Captain Marvel, Superman, Wonder Woman. Mickey Mouse, Lois Lane and even Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos as they transcend the laws of science to stop insensate evil in these 26 gravity-defying depictions, cruising the lonely spaceways far beyond the final frontier.
