The Last Witch Hunter is a high fantasy mixed with modern-day adventure about Kaulder, a warrior who slays a witch-queen and is cursed with immortality. We have two clips plus a trailer. It seems that there could be more to this sword-and-sorcery story than first meets the eye.
From what we can see in the trailer, Kaulder is less concerned with Conan-like glory and more focused on his own grief over the loss of his wife and daughter. If this isn’t just trailer hocus-pocus, and Kaulder’s heartbreak is actual part of the film’s storyline, this could be one of the braver acting choices from star Vin Diesel. After all, most people only recognize him behind the wheel of a fast and furious car.
In a way, Diesel is responsible for the film’s existence: According to HitFix, Vin Diesel had written the intro to the 30th-anniversary edition of Dungeons & Dragons, in which he described his witch hunter character. The Last Witch Hunter writer Cory Goodman then wrote his film around that character.
Will this movie be as fun as your D&D campaign? We’ll know soon: The Last Witch Hunter drops on Oct. 23.
