The 3-D animated How to Train Your Dragon earned a fire-breathing $43.3 million at the domestic box office to rank number one for the March 26 weekend, knocking Alice in Wonderland to number two.

Alice lost half of its audience in its fourth weekend of release but still managed to take in another $17.3 million, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The weekend's sci-fi debut, Hot Tub Time Machine, took in just $13.7 million to rank third.

Dragon opened in 4,055 locations, and its gross was boosted by ticket sales from 2,178 3-D theaters, which accounted for 68 percent of the movie's total.
