Before anyone was cast as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's rugged treasure hunter, the artist who gave Nick Fury his techno-'60s swagger was hired to craft the first images of the archaeologist rogue-hero.

And when we call Steranko a stud, we're not being hyperbolic. Before working for Marvel— illustrating books like Captain America and Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a groundbreaking pop-surrealist flair—Steranko was, allegedy, a gymnast, a fire-eater, a musician, an escape artist, a pugilist, a stage magician and a burglar.

All of which makes him the perfect guy to do for Raiders of the Lost Ark what concept artist Ralph McQuarrie did for Star Wars: conjure style-setting images from words on a page. And looking at these paintings, it's clear how much made it to the big screen.
