They say don’t judge a book by its cover. But when it comes to sci-fi movie posters in 2015, we’re judging quite a bit. 2015’s sci-fi/fantasy/horror movie posters abounded with clichés. Although the good outweighed the bad, the mediocre outweighed them both.
So much so that I can break down the clichés for you.
Poltergeist. Self/Less. Jurassic World. Paranormal Activity.
Fake lens flare that appears from nowhere:
Fantastic Four. Ant-Man. Kingsman. San Andreas. Pan.
Avengers: Age of Ultron. Terminator: Genisys. Jupiter Ascending. Ant-Man. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Pixels.
Guns guns guns:
Predestination. Avengers: Age of Ultron. Terminator: Genisys. Insurgent. Jupiter Ascending. Agent 47. Self/less. Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalpyse. Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Man from UNCLE. The Last Witchhunter. SPECTRE.
Luckily for us, these cliches are just a passing fad; for example, posters constrained to blue and orange aren't as prevalent as they had been in 2009.
Note: Movie studios tend to release multiple posters, so I critiqued either the posters I saw in person or the ones used on IMDb’s main image of that movie. Sadly, that leaves out some wonderful variant and international posters, and fans of poster art should check them out on Impawards.com.
Here are 43 posters from 2015. You’ve been warned.
