This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Star Wars: Rebels.
Ahsoka is one of the best characters to come out of the new Star Wars expanded universe; she’s captured the heart of many a fan. When the character, who originally debuted on the TV series The Clone Wars, reappeared in Star Wars: Rebels, viewers were excited to see an older, adult version of the character they’d come to love.
But our time with Ahsoka during Rebels was tantalizingly brief. Her post-Clone Wars backstory was filled in via Ahsoka, the excellent novel by E.K. Johnston (who I personally nominate to write every Ahsoka story because she’s just so good), but there were a lot of questions surrounding what Ahsoka had been up to, and viewers wanted more. The Season 2 finale saw Ahsoka confront Vader, and the outcome of that battle was unclear (though, at the end of the episode, viewers witnessed Ahsoka descending into the depths of the Sith temple on Malachor).
The character was absent for Season 3, and didn’t return until the very end of Season 4, when Ezra pulled her out of the duel with Vader, saving her life. Ahsoka was returned to her time, though, so presumably she spent years in the depths of the Malachor temple. And at the very end of the Rebels finale, a white-clad Ahsoka waited for Sabine in a post-Return of the Jedi time frame to search for Ezra.
While it was wonderful to see Ahsoka again, even if just for a few episodes, I think most fans will agree with me when I say that it wasn’t enough. It’s time to let Ahsoka be the hero of the story, and here are five ways I think that should happen.
An Obi-Wan/Ahsoka live-action film
Set in between the events of the Ahsoka novel (which ends with the character becoming a Rebel operative called Fulcrum) and Rebels, this movie would see Ewan McGregor finally reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ashley Eckstein, who does Ahsoka’s voice so well, finally don Togruta makeup to play the character on screen.
I don’t really care what the plot is — the fine people at Lucasfilm are good at that side of it (though it could involve some sort of mission in which Ahsoka must travel to Tatooine). But it would involve a reunion I think we’re all itching to see, plus it’s a chance to make Ahsoka a part of the film franchise.
I want to see more of Ahsoka’s life as Fulcrum generally — where did she live? How did she operate? Did she meet people along the way? Did she work closely with Bail and Leia Organa? Did she maybe have a romance, and find some happiness in a life that has been filled with so much sorrow? If this time period is covered in a TV show (or even a book), I’m okay with that, but I’d like to know more about it regardless.
Ashoka explores the depths of Malachor
Now it appears as though Ahsoka was in the depths of the Sith temple on Malachor for years. What was she doing? What did she learn? What kind of new knowledge did she gain? What tests was she forced to endure? A comic series would do an awesome job filling in the sheer weight of what we don’t know about Ahsoka’s journey on Malachor.
Where was Ahsoka during the original trilogy?
This is great book potential — where was Ahsoka during the events of Episodes IV, V, and VI? Was she still on Malachor? Was she working for the Rebellion? Was she looking for Ezra? After all, his “Come find me” at their last meeting has more weight now that we know his fate.
Luke tells Ahsoka about his father’s redemption
Now that we know what happened to Luke Skywalker, it’s only a matter of time before novels (and maybe a TV show) are announced to fill in the gaps between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. In one of these many books or comic series, I need to see a scene between Luke and Ahsoka. I need to know that he knows who she is, and that they met.
But more than that, I want to see Luke explain to Ahsoka directly that Anakin did come back to the light in the end. And I want her to have the chance to mourn him as the master he was, rather than the monster he became. And maybe I want to see the two of them cry together a little.
Sabine and Ahsoka travel the galaxy
Considering where Rebels left off, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a new TV show or novel starring Sabine and Ahsoka, where the two search the galaxy for Ezra (and we’d better have Tiya Sircar and Ashley Eckstein back as their voice actors). It’s not clear what happened to him (is he on Mortis, maybe?), but he specifically asked Ahsoka to come find him. I want to see the journey, and what happens along the way.
