"The Monkey’s Paw” has been freaking us out for more than a century, and with a new big-screen version is set to open Oct. 8, we decided that for the seventh in our series of posts celebrating the 31 Days of Halloween, we'd look back at our eight favorite adaptations of the classic horror short story.
A quick refresher: "The Monkey’s Paw,” written by William Wymark Jacobs, is about a cursed monkey’s paw that grants any wish — but with a horrible twist. Basically, it makes your wish come true, but almost always with terrible consequences.
The original story follows a couple, Mr. and Mrs. White, who get the paw from a family friend. After wishing for money, a family member dies and they get the cash as compensation. Whoops. Then they wish for the deceased to come back to life — but Mr. White burns the last wish before they can open the door, for fear of starting the zombie apocalypse (or something like that).
The new movie version hits theaters and VOD this week, and will premiere on the Chiller network in early 2014.
Without further ado, here are eight of our favorite tellings of the horror tale.
