While Neill Blomkamp takes a bit of a break from Hollywood, the filmmaker is getting back to his roots with some independent shorts — and the latest one is straight off the VHS cassette from the 1980s.
Blomkamp’s (District 9, Chappie) latest short is framed to look like a long-lost 1980s infomercial, designed to sell a high-end cutting machine called the Damasu 950. Instead of being a kitchen utensil, this thing looks like something straight out of a horror movie — and things go about as you’d expect. The short clocks in at just over 3 minutes, and it’s obviously the type of thing that would really only work in this type of format.
Which is fine, because this is the kind of quirky, weird stuff Blomkamp now has the freedom to do with his Oats Studios indie banner. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s fun. Which is good enough, right?
