We’re less than three weeks away from the return of Supergirl, and yet we don’t know much about the villain the Girl of Steel will face this season, Reign. Thankfully, some juicy tidbits about the Season 3 Big Bad have emerged, and we have a clearer picture of the character making her debut on the superhero series.

Speaking to TV Insider, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg opened up about Reign (Odette Annable), or rather, Samantha Arias, as she has grown up to be on Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) home turf of National City. Sam is apparently a single mom who has no idea that she is a Kryptonian bioengineered weapon of mass destruction known as a Worldkiller.

“But she has no idea! She has been living in National City as [a now grown-up] person named Samantha Arias. One thing we’ve never done on Arrow or The Flash is watch the villain become the villain. Sam is just Sam,” Kreisberg said.

However, as viewers will come to see over the course of the season, Sam “will realize there is something different about her,” adding that “It’s a fun dark-mirror version of the journey Christopher Reeve took in the original Superman as Clark.”

But that’s not all. We’re told that Sam/Reign will develop ties with the show’s main characters, ultimately creating tensions between them. “Everyone will have a relationship with her,” Andrew Kreisberg said, “and that will drive much of the season in terms of how far they’re willing to go to stop her when she becomes Reign. Some will believe she needs to be saved; others will think she needs to be stopped.”

What do you think about Andrew Kreisberg's revelations about Reign/Samantha Arias? Supergirl returns with a fresh new season on Oct. 9 on The CW.
