Independence Day NYC

A transformer explosion in Astoria, NY led to some pretty funny tweets about an alien invasion

Earlier this evening, a transformer exploded in the neighborhood of Astoria in New York City, resulting in a terrifying light show above the city's skyline. New York City Council member Costa Constantinides tweeted out that the NYPD's 114th district was on the scene, and thankfully there has been no reported injuries or damage to nearby homes.

However, the bright blue beams that lit up the sky certainly caught the attention of nearby residents, who shared the shocking images on Twitter.

As the official word about the transformer explosion that caused the bright blue lights started to circulate out, it didn't stop Twitter from having some fun about what the "real" cause was.

Maybe it was the lifetime's worth of alien invasion stories that level New York City to the ground (see: Independence Day, The Avengers, The Day the Earth Stood Still), but more than a few people seemed ready to take on any invaders from beyond.

Finally came the inevitable realization that if aliens were to arrive, it would be thoroughly documented on social media.

If you happen to live in New York City, the NYPD is advising that everyone stay away from the area around 20th Ave and 31 St. In the meantime, keep watching those alien invasion movies. You never know when they'll come in handy.
