A post-apocalypse mutant finale for How I Met Your Mother?

If you squint just right, How I Met Your Mother can be seen as a sci-fi show. Really.

Its stars certainly have sci-fi cred, thanks to Neil Patrick Harris (the Dr. Horrible of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) and Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Willow Rosenberg). And the series IS being told from the year 2030, after all.

But now Jason Segel, who plays Marshall Eriksen, shares that when the series finale comes, he hopes it goes sci-fi in a big way.

How does he feel the comedy should end? In an interview with GQ, the actor said he told the writers that they should finish off the series with either a Lost-like purgatory—or an I Am Legend-like mutant uprising.

Here are Segel's suggestions:

"One is that they're dead. The two kids and their father—they're dead, and they're in purgatory, and he's telling the story for eternity. ...

"And then my other suggestion, which they never used, which I think would be so funny, is—it's the future, right? I think in one of those scenes, they should open the window, and it should be, like, a post-apocalyptic wasteland outside. It should be like I Am Legend. Horrible mutants."

We don't know about you, but it sounds good to us!
