The ratings for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might not be setting the world on fire these days, but ABC remains committed to expanding its Marvel footprint in prime time. Up next? Marvel’s Most Wanted.
Variety reports that ABC has placed a pilot order for the project, conceived as a direct spinoff from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., set to focus on Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter. The two actors are attached to toppling the pilot and series, if it scores a full pickup. Behind the scenes, S.H.I.E.L.D. producers Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski will serve as showrunners, with Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb producing.
No word on the exact plot, though the report notes the show would serve as an “entirely new project solely focused on the two characters to continue their story” as they embark on a mysterious new adventure. These two characters definitely have the charisma and action chops to headline a spinoff, though it’d be a shame to see them removed from the S.H.I.E.L.D. ensemble.
They might not have been original cast members, but this duo are a key piece of the puzzle that has seen S.H.I.E.L.D. transform into a fantastic genre television series. It could be risky to spin them off at this point, and you definitely run the risk of diluting the flagship product. But, that being said, it’d be great to see Mockingbird get some more screen time.
It’s interesting to note that word broke about Marvel’s Most Wanted back in April, though ABC said the project would not be moving forward. Something changed, apparently, and now the network seems keen to get it off the ground. Here’s hoping that change of heart means they’ve landed on a dynamite concept everyone is excited to make.
