ABC pulls the plug on that Mockingbird-centric Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff

Though The CW is going spinoff crazy with its DC superhero shows, it looks like ABC has decided to take a more conservative approach with its Marvel properties.

Spoilers ahead for season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D!

Upfront presentations revealed the network will be bringing back both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter (woohoo!), though news broke after the initial announcements from Deadline that the potential spinoff focusing on Mockingbird (Adrianne Palecki) and Hunter (Kick Blood) has apparently bit the bullet in the development phase.

Little was known about the exact plot, though the events at the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s current season were apparently going to set up the spinoff. Considering the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the brink of all-out war with the Inhumans, we think the spinoff could’ve been related to that (a limited run focusing on the duo undertaking a critical mission, perhaps?). Hopefully, whatever they were planning for the spinoff series will be incorporated into Season 3, and we’ll have some strong stories across the board to tie it all together next year.

Regardless, Palecki and Blood have been some of the standouts since their addition to the cast this year, so it’s probably a good thing they’ll be sticking around. S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally starting to find its creative footing and niche, and the last thing it needs now it to jettison a chunk of the cast to feed a spinoff.

Though the Mockingbird show didn’t make the cut, we know ABC is keen to get some more Marvel fare on the air. Here’s hoping they can find a formula (we have a few ideas) that can make it work and bring back some viewers.
