There are still a whole lot of unanswered questions left hanging at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has inspired myriad fan theories about how all these pieces will fit together in the coming sequels. Thanks to director J.J. Abrams, we now have a fresh piece of intel to add into all those Rey theories.

While speaking on the director’s commentary for the Collector’s Edition 3D Blu-ray of The Force Awakens, Abrams revealed Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) had never actually met before. Now, this is significant for a few reasons: Many fans have theorized Rey and Kylo Ren had some type of connection dating back to their childhood (be it as siblings, or cousins, or something else). But if they’ve never actually met before, that would torpedo a lot of those theories.

Here’s an excerpt from comments via Tumblr:

“One of the new relationships that we were focusing on was between Kylo Ren and Rey. They’ve never met but he’s heard of this girl.”

As /Film notes, a lot of those theories were born from the exchange where Kylo Ren becomes enraged when he hears there’s “a girl” helping BB-8 escape. Many saw that as an indication Kylo had an inkling of who this woman was from some other experiences in his life, but now it seems it could’ve just been frustration over the fact that BB-8 remains at large. But still, the mainline Star Wars films have almost always been about the Skywalker family — and it made sense Rey would connect there in some way.

Hey maybe those long-long Kenobi grand-daughter theories are onto something ...

What do you think? How does this reveal change your Rey theories?
