Fan films are a tricky business, and ones based on massive properties are even tougher to get right. But the team behind Darth Maul: Apprentice got it all right. Seriously, just go watch this right now.

Written, produced, directed and edited by Shawn Bu, this unofficial Star Wars short focuses on the early days of (you guessed it) Darth Maul as he faces off with a Jedi team is some lightsaber battles that have no business being this good. The choreography is amazing for a fan project, and expands to some massive five-person melees that will have you on the edge of your seat. The story isn’t half bad, either, but it’s the action that steals this show.

"We worked incredibly hard on this film for almost 2 years! We always felt that Darth Maul should have had more screen time," Bu said. "So we wanted to create a film just for him with the best lightsaber fights we could do! This is not based on any books, comics etc."

Bu does an excellent job setting the scene with some nice cinematography, which pays some subtle homages to the look and feel of the original trilogy while also feeling like its own thing. Which is saying something, considering most of the runtime is pure adrenaline.
