The recent Star Wars spin-off Rogue One had a lot of success with a CGI character in the ensemble, and the Han Solo film is looking to follow suit.
Variety reports Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Broadchurch) tops the short list to play an unnamed CGI character in the Han Solo project. The role is described as being a "significant part of the ensemble," in the same vein as Chewbacca, C-3P0 and K-2SO. Like K-2SO, the role would reportedly be CGI-driven (Alan Tudyk wore a motion capture suit for his K-2SO droid performance in Rogue One). So smart money is on this character being a droid of some kind, but that's still unconfirmed.
If she lands the gig, Waller-Bridge will join Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke in the ensemble. Waller-Bridge is a legit up-and-comer, and if she is playing a droid, it'd bring a feminine approach to a type of character that has almost exclusively been male. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie) are attached to direct the film, so it's no surprise they could be shaking things up.
The Han Solo project is set to open May 25, 2018.
