Next time you have a headache, it might not be from nine hours of staring at a computer screen.

Adult Swim has just unleashed the first trailer for its stop-motion monstrosity The Shivering Truth. This is the latest thing to crawl out of the imagination of Vernon Chatman — creator of Wonder Showzen and The Heart, She Holler — who obviously knows how to freak you out to the point of questioning whether you really are seeing what you’re seeing.

At logline level, the series is described as “a miniature propulsive omnibus clusterbomb of painfully riotous daymares, all dripping with the orange goo of dream logic” with a “series of loosely-linked emotional parables about stories within tales that crawled out of the deepest caverns of your unconscious mind and became lovingly animated in breath-slapping stop motion—in other words, it is the TRUTH.”

Some really deranged and sometimes diseased (like the guy with the parasitic caterpillar-thing eating his brain) characters will be voiced by Chatman, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Starlee Kine.

Is this “truth” Adult Swim is talking about found somewhere inside that mostly empty skull? Or does the hairy orange thing behind the curtain have the answer? Either way, when a preschooler starts having visions and her hands and face end up slick with blood, you know humanity has no hope.

The Shivering Truth has managed to do things with stop-motion animation that appear even scarier than if they had been accomplished with CGI. When the rolls of flesh on a half-naked guy in a zebra Speedo are made of the same stuff, it is somehow easier to believe that those hands emerging from where his nipples should be are actually his own flesh and not something digitally added in. That phenomenon may or may not have something to do with a woman he meets in a bar getting all her fingers hacked off.

Turn off the lights and turn on Adult Swim at midnight on Dec. 9 if you want to have the trippiest nightmares ever. In the meantime, check out the trailer above, and let us know what you think!
