From the moment former Disney star Zendaya was cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, there were reports she would be playing the new-look Mary Jane Watson. So who is she actually playing?
Minor spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Homecoming!
So is Zendaya playing Mary Jane Watson? Nope. As was originally reported upon her casting, the actress is portraying the seemingly new character of Michelle, a young lady who is a bit of a loner and not really all that close to Peter until later in the film. But! According to Bleeding Cool, at one point in Homecoming, Michelle apparently tells Peter that her “friends call [her] MJ,” though she’s still definitely not the Mary Jane fans know from the comics. This is a whole new world, though, so it stands to reason she could be a potential love interest role in a future sequel. Who knows? Heck, the “MJ” comment could just be a bit of trolling at the rumors at this point.
It’s funny that we’re talking about this at all, considering Zendaya spent basically the past year telling anyone who would listen that she’s not playing Mary Jane. If anything, it’s a good sign that Marvel Studios opted to largely sidestep the Spider-Man love story in this film, since that’s something we’ve seen in pretty much every other Spider-Man movie to date. There’s plenty of time to let Peter Parker fall in love — let’s let the kid be Spidey for a bit first.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 7.
What’s your take on Zendaya’s role? Are you glad she’s not Mary Jane? Do you like the idea of introducing a new character to the Spidey-verse?
