After being so excited with the Transformers writers' room that has apparently spawned a few solid sequel ideas, Hasbro and Paramount are expanding the concept to a few other toy properties. Get ready for a G.I. Joe film universe and a Micronauts film universe.
According to Deadline, the studio has tapped Akiva Goldsman to manage the new writers' room, and they’ll apparently be following the TV writers' room model of assembling a team to pitch and develop ideas together. Building film universes is all the rage these days, and considering Transformers is one of the biggest film franchises in existence (for whatever reason), it makes sense they’d ride that rocket as far as possible.
But G.I. Joe and Micronauts? Those could be interesting. We’ve already had two G.I. Joe films, which were good-but-not-great box-office performers. Considering how slapdash they seemed creatively, a writers' room could be a good approach just to get a clear through-line for another film or two. There have been rumblings the studio wanted to turn Micronauts into the next big film property, and this seems to be the first step in that direction. Here's hoping it ends up better than what we've gotten from Transformers.
What do you think? Are these franchises rich enough to spawn full-fledged universes?
