After being MIA since the beginning of Season 5, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) made an unexpected return to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the closing moments of last week’s episode, “A Life Earned,” when he unmasked himself and requested that Quake “fight to the death,” since she’s the Destroyer of Worlds and all that.

Now there are a few questions that need answering: How did Fitz finally get there in the first place? What's his plan regarding Daisy? And what has he been doing all this time while his teammates were stuck on that rock in the future? Well, it looks like we’ll at least get some answers to all those questions when S.H.I.E.L.D. returns with a brand-new episode Friday.

The sneak peek for this week’s episode, titled “Rewind,” reveals Fitz has been in custody for six months, trying to find out what happened to his teammates. And he’s got only one possible explanation: They were abducted by aliens. Which is hilariously not wrong.

Problem is, the government officials don’t believe a word he's saying, and they threaten to cut off book and TV privileges and send him to his room without dessert so he can grow old and die in a cell. Until Fitz’s attorney waltzes in and he’s none other than disavowed agent Lance Hunter (Nick Blood).

In a recent interview with TV Line, Blood talked about the key role Hunter plays in Fitz’s journey to find out where his friends went: “I don’t think Fitz could have managed it without him — or at least that’s what I think Hunter tells himself. Fitz is very grateful to see him, despite the fact that some of his ideas don’t go quite according to plan.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Dec. 22 on ABC.
