After keeping fans largely in the dark about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5, Marvel finally showed the first 20 minutes of its flagship TV series at its panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and revealed that the show will be returning to ABC on Dec. 1.
Spoiler alert! Contains details about the first 20 minutes of Season 5.
In it, we find out how Coulson ended up in space after being grabbed at the end of Season 4. Let's just say that the episode involves a monolith, an asteroid field, large and menacing creatures, and a few mysterious figures, including one who professes to being a "true believer."
So it seems that the first act of the episode is going to add more questions than answers. We do know that the first "arc" of Season 5 will take place in space, and it will see the Kree moving in.
The Kree, blue-skinned aliens that like to experiment on young civilizations, have been integral to the MCU in general and S.H.I.E.L.D. in particular. The villain of Guardians of the Galaxy was Ronan the Accuser, a high-ranking Kree warrior. In Season 1, we found out that Coulson was revived thanks to Kree blood. And of course, the Kree are the engineers of the Inhumans, who have been central to the whole series, including Skye being revealed as Daisy Johnson, the superhero Quake.
Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Coulson, will be directing Episode 6 this season, which he calls a "trust exercise." Chloe Bennet, who plays Daisy, said it was great to work with him as a director because “he knows these characters better than anyone else.”
Showrunner Jeph Loeb revealed, meanwhile, that FitzSimmons won't get a happy ending. They’re separated by space again and “Fitz has a lot of thinking to do” after what happened to him in the Framework. Loeb joked that we might want to start looking at Mack and YoYo as our role model relationship.
