Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet: 'Hollywood is racist'

For Marvel fans, Chloe Bennet is best known for playing Daisy Johnson (aka Quake) on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now she’s speaking out about how Hollywood treats minorities, and her own experiences as a half-Chinese actress.

Bennet was born Chloe Wang, but says she changed her last name as a way to get herself through the door in auditions. She was having trouble getting booked as “Wang,” but that changed when she was listed on call sheets as “Bennet.” The issue of whitewashing roles has deservedly been a hot topic the past few years, and rose to the forefront once again in recent weeks with Ed Skrein’s exit from the Hellboy reboot. Bennet praised Skrein for making the call, and recounted her own experience when asked by a fan why she changed her name:

“Changing my last name doesn’t change the fact that my BLOOD is half Chinese, that I lived in China, speak Mandarin or that I was culturally raised both American and Chinese,” she wrote. “It means I had to pay my rent, and Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable.”

Bennet reprises her role as Daisy in the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is tentatively set to return in late 2017 after Inhumans wraps its ABC run.
