One of the biggest surprises in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been the decidedly low-key relationship between Ward and May, and now the stars are here to explain the unlikely romance.

Though most viewers likely expected him to end up with resident hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet), Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) has been hooking up with Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) for several weeks now and things seem to actually be going...pretty well.

Wen said she believes the relationship is the manifestation of the two characters basically sharing a foxhole, and being essentially the only two straight-up soldiers on The Bus. They have a shared experience in that, and Wen said she believes it helps them both cope:

"I really love this relationship between May and Ward. It really builds on our characters and the secrets that they try to suppress in their world so they can function in the SHIELD world. But being human beings, it manifests where you need to have some sort of release of the stress of that kind of a job. I think they just understand each other."

Though the two actors are almost 20 years apart in age, producer Jed Whedon said the age thing was never much of an issue between Wen (50) and Dalton (31) when they decided to put them together.

“Our goal with that was, when we were talking about it, is there's a way they both become really cool and there's no discussion of age or anything. They're two warriors who had a common experience.

Part of it is Ward came into this plane not really big on people. It’s not that he's having a harder time; she's just more used to it, and I think that they're both kind of double checking with each other saying, 'You're not being weird?' 'No, no. Are you being weird?' I think that they both have a pretty good handle on it.”

Though it seemed like a strange fit, the relationship has actually worked pretty well, and it was one of the few unexpected moves the series has been able to pull off up to this point. Here’s hoping things’ll keep rolling, and with Deathlok on the way, here’s hoping the back half of season one blows our socks off.

What do you think of May and Ward? Good move?
