Marvel’s flagship series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was on the bubble this year, but it’ll officially be back on ABC next season for 22 episodes. So, what can we expect as the series heads into its fifth year?

IGN caught up with producers Jed Whedon and Jeffrey Bell, and they talked about that Season 4 finale that saw Coulson apparently hanging out on a spaceship, getting ready to go back to work. Which is some type of spaceship work, apparently. The duo wouldn’t confirm much of anything about next season, but when asked if the space reveal is just a fakeout, Whedon hedged that “bait-and-switches aren’t as fun.” So it sounds like at least the first arc will be set in space … somehow.

As for how long the series might run, Bell said they really do have a feeling for where the story is going to end, and they hope to have a heads up ahead of the last season to bring the show to a proper close. Which is good — because leaving Coulson and the gang hanging on a cliffhanger would be a shame.

Here’s an excerpt from Bell’s comments:

“We have a sense of how we'd like the show to end when it ends. We just need to know when that time is coming so we can build to it properly. Our characters have gone through some pretty big arcs over the past four seasons, and we hope to continue to do that going forward. If Season 5 is the last one, we'll build towards it, because when we know that we can adjust for that.”

The fifth season of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set for the midseason on ABC, and the show is shifting from Thursday to Friday, where the ratings expectations will hopefully be a bit less strenuous.

What do you want to see from Season 5 of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
