Love is in the air for The Hobbit? Might be, according to former Being Human actor Aidan Turner, who spilled the beans about a possible romantic subplot for his hottie dwarf character Kili in Peter Jackson's upcoming and highly anticipated Hobbit films.

The tantalizing and surprising info was revealed in the recent issue of Total Film magazine, which has just published its "Summer 2012 Future 100" issue featuring six Hobbit actors: Aidan Turner (Kili), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman) and Benedict Cumberbatch (who voices and mo-caps Smaug the dragon and the Necromancer).

The interesting bit resides in what actor Aidan Turner said about his character, Kili, revealing a bit of a subplot that didn't exist in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel but was added by Peter Jackson and company for the movie adaptation:

"Kili's part has been expanded from the novel; as well as chasing treasure, he's also pursuing female elf Tauriel. But is he setting his sights too high? 'I guess he knows nothing can ever happen,' he explains. 'She's about 20ft tall and he's only two!'"

Poor guy. . . Looks like this romance may only be a one-way street (it also kind of echoes how Gimli [John Rhys-Davies] became quite smitten by Galadriel [Cate Blanchett] in The Lord of the Rings). But who knows, weirder things have happened before in fantasy-land, right?

What do you think about this added romance in the Hobbit films? Are you guys happy about this radical departure from the book? Do you believe it's the reason the character of Tauriel was created in the first place?

Part one The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in theaters on Dec. 14, 2012.
