In an unusual move, Dark Horse, not Marvel, will be releasing an graphic novel that ties into to Guy Ritchie's live-action remake of Disney's Aladdin, the publisher announced yesterday.

Written by Corinna Bechko (Green Lantern: Earth One) and drawn by Pablo Vite (Next Jen), the 72-page anthology comic (out this spring) will tell a number of tales set in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Agrabah and centering around the lives of Aladdin, the Genie, Princess Jasmine, Abu (Aladdin's pet monkey), Raja (Jasmine's pet tiger), and the Magic Carpet.

Since the Genie and Magic Carpet are trapped in the Cave of Wonders prior to the events of the film, it will be interesting to see how their stories are handled, especially since the former is also trapped inside a magic lamp.

Here's the not-so-exciting teaser art below:

Mena Massoud (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan) leads the film's cast as the titular character, starring alongside Will Smith (Genie), Naomi Scott (Jasmine), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Numan Acar (Hakim), and Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders). In particular, characters played by Dalia, Hakim, and Anders seemingly did not appear in the animated original from 1992.

The comic goes on sale April 30 (pre-order a copy here), while Aladdin hits theaters May 24. Ritchie co-wrote the screenplay with John August (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark)
